Located half way along the South Downs Way, the White Horse Hotel is the ideal base from which to explore the newly created National Park, which secured the area’s future early in 2009 after 60 years of campaigning and is the first National Park to be created in England since the New Forest in 2005.
Running for more than 100 miles between Winchester and Eastbourne, the South Downs Way provides the main access to the new National Park, opening up the landscape, wildlife and culture of the area to visitors to the White Horse Hotel
Despite never rising above 700 feet, the 100 miles of chalk downland offer views of some 40 miles in all directions, along with orchids and butterflies in the summer season.
Just a short journey from the White Horse are the historic towns of Arundel, Chichester and Steyning, while just eight miles away is Worthing and its well-known beach.
Also within easy striking distance of Storrington and the White Horse is Goodwood, offering a range of attractions for most tastes, including horseracing, motorsport, golf, aviation, health club and spa, while Parham House is nearby, with its gardens offering seven acres of pleasure grounds and a four-acre walled garden.
A few miles away from Storrington is Amberley village and Amberley Wild Brooks, a busy bird habitat. Sullington Warren is to the north-east of Storrington and includes nine prehistoric long barrows along with woodland and heath.
While providing a convenient base for a trip out into the surrounding countryside, Storrington itself – known in the Domesday Book as “Estorchestone – has attractions closer to home, including its own museum.
